July Newsletter: Education Advocates Speak Out
GCE-US coalition members and education advocates across the country have been busy this summer getting the word out about Education for All. Whether gathering here in Washington, D.C. to meet with members of Congress, or at conferences in New Orleans and Seattle that drew thousands of teachers and education experts, Americans showed their strong support for achieving universal basic education.
RESULTS International Conference
GCE-US coalition member RESULTS/RESULTS Educational Fund held its annual International Conference June 20-22 in Washington D.C, celebrating 30 years of RESULTS. GCE-US joined RESULTS staff on a panel about Education for All that included a lively discussion with RESULTS’ grassroots members from across the country. A key part of the conference was the Day of Action, where more than 200 RESULTS volunteers took to Capitol Hill to meet with their representatives in Congress and asked them to support the Education for All Act.

GCE-US Director Joanna Kuebler discussed the Lesson for All with a workshop of teachers and international education experts at the Global Education Summit, part of the NEA’s Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly in New Orleans.
The theme of the 2010 Global Education Summit was “Diplomacy for a New Generation: Global Education in an Interdependent World.” GCE-US presented strategies for teaching about Millennium Development Goal #2 – universal basic education. The workshop also introduced the Lesson for All – a series of classroom activities used by teachers in classrooms across the country as part of the Global Campaign for Education’s Global Action Week each April.
NEA Vice-President Lily Eskelsen spoke at the summit about the importance of gender equality in education and the campaign to meet the Education for All goals. She also introduced a new video, “Acting Locally – Connecting Globally: On the Move for Gender Equality.”

Teachers from all over the United States signed up to teach the Lesson for All at the GCE-US booth at the AFT Convention in Seattle July 7-11. For three days, GCE-US introduced teachers to the Lesson for All and talked about efforts in the United States to help out-of-school children in developing countries get a quality basic education.
Thousands of AFT delegates wrote letters to their members of Congress, asking them to support the Education for All Act of 2010. More than 900 delegates also signed a petition to President Obama asking him to keep his promise to establish a Global Fund for Education. The excitement around Education for All was evident throughout the conference.
