Education Summit in South Africa
The Government of South Africa is hosting an education summit on July 7 in Cape Town, South Africa, before the final World Cup game. The summit is the last chance for world leaders to gather to discuss Education for All before the Millennium Development Goals Summit in September.
In May, GCE-US sent a letter to President Obama encouraging him to attend this important event.
Action to End Child Labor
Saturday, June 12 was World Day Against Child Labor. To mark the day and call for action to end child labor, representatives from the US government, civil society and the business community gathered at the State Department on Tuesday, June 8.
Hosted by the US Departments of State and Labor, as well as GCE-US coalition members, the American Federation of Teachers and the International Labor Rights Forum, speakers highlighted the important role of the Education for All goals in eradicating child labor and getting children in school. AFT President Randi Weingarten spoke at the event and pledged her support for a multilateral Global Fund for Education.
