Population of Young People Out-of-School by Region
There are about 72 million children around the world who are not enrolled in primary school.
Of the children in school, 100 million will be forced to drop out before completing primary school.
Children most likely to be out of school generally live in rural areas and come from the poorest families.
The regional statistics are staggering…
- One-half of the world’s out-of-school children live in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia combined are home to more than 75% of the children who are not in school.
- Nigeria, Pakistan, India and Ethiopia have the largest number of out of school children
– 23 million in all four countries combined!
- There are 28 developing countries with over one-half million out-of-school children in each.
- In South and West Asia, girls account for 69% of out-of-school children.
